A New Year, A New Home

Hello everyone,
Welcome to our new swanky home! We’ve been a little silent; having spent November and December looking for a place, decorating and moving in.
Now that our little corner of the internet has been established, get ready for more frequent posts from us!

Our first project of 2011 saw YRC following Janus Education’s Young Author Award finalists to Dignity Kitchen for a one-day workshop. Project Dignity, a social enterprise conceptualised by Mr. Koh Seng Choon, gives the disabled and disadvantaged the chance to live a normal life.

Impossible? “No it isn’t!” as the kids learned in their workshop. They interacted with the handicapped and learned that despite their disabilities, they are normal people who live normal lives. Mr. Norjumanese, 32, is the cheerful blind man who handles the cash register. He taught the kids how to count numbers using Braille. At another station, Mr. Sim happily taught them how to decorate bowls of dessert while Mr. Elison taught them how to sign We Wish You a Merry Christmas; greatly encouraging the kids with each word. They clearly touched the children with their hope and optimism.

According to Mr. Koh, “The interaction between the young writers and our disabled students will be excellent learning for both parties. Educating today’s young people will help the adults of the future to be comfortable working and living with the disadvantaged and disabled members of society.”
As a follow-up to the workshop, YRC will train its first batch of Cub Reporters to explore issues related to the disabled and disadvantaged in Singapore; shedding light on one of Singapore’s most inspiring populations.

Don’t forget to grab a copy of YRC’s March – April 2011 issue to read our Cub Reporters’ first articles.

YAC – The First Session!

Last Friday, Sofia, Adeline and I had an amazing time at Woodlands Regional Library. We were at our first session of the Young Author Club. I must admit, we were a little nervous at first. We hoped the participants coming in would enjoy themselves, would listen and most importantly, would participate.

Guess the Proverbs

When I was in London two weeks ago, we went up to Belvoir Castle for my cousin’s wedding. It has been the ancestral home of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland for the last 1000 years and is still occupied by the 11th Duke and Duchess and their five children. In fact, the Duchess’ daughter’s Shih Tzu crashed the wedding dinner and caused a fuss. It was hilarious!
